Psychological Effects of Abortion

Before I started researching how an abortion affects women, I had an idea of the effects. I had been working with Molly for a few months and was able to see clients, post-abortion, feeling lost, lonely, and thinking they are the only women experiencing these emotions. Through my research I found out how abortion leaves a lasting psychological effect on a woman’s body and mind, hence needing to be thought out before choosing an option for her child.

Some ways in which abortion can be done is spoken about through the New Health Adviser online resource. Some options are through medication, an aspiration abortion, or a second or third trimester abortion (How, 2016). Each involves terminating the heartbeat of the child and suctioning out the remaining fetal parts, or if done early in the pregnancy, the body will remove of the child on its own.

Many women experience regret or fear following the abortion. They may regret their decision and have fear of whether or not they will be able to conceive children again. Women experience many physical symptoms following an abortion including fever, nausea, bleeding, and abdominal fear (Abortion risks, n.d.).

There are other options, though. Parenting a child comes with a lot of responsibility although it is a doable choice. Adoption numbers have been on the rise since the early 2000s and any parents can put their child up for adoption through a local agency or hospital in the state of Connecticut through the Safe Haven law (Adoption, 2016).

Some sickening statistics I found about abortion are:

Research Paper

- 21% of all U.S. pregnancies (excluding miscarriages) ended in abortion” (U.S. abortion, 2016).

- 1.6 Million abortions in 1990

- 1.3 Million abortions in 2015

(O’Bannon, n.d.).
